Loukia Loulaki - cello
Loukia Loulaki was born in Athens, Greece, in 1992. She studied cello on a scholarship at the Athens Conservatory, completing her studies at the age of 16 with the highest distinction. She was awarded the Gold Medal, a recognition bestowed for the first time since 1915 upon a cellist at the institution. By that time, she had already won several national music competitions in Greece.
From 2007 to 2009 she studied with Prof. Marianne Chen. In June 2008 she was awarded the “Gina Bachauer Prize” in memory of Mstislav Rostropovich, and at the same time received a scholarship from the World Harmony Foundation, which was renewed for the following academic year.
Beginning in March 2007, she studied with Prof. Natalia Gutman at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. In September 2010, at the age of 18, she was admitted to the Master’s program at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (MUK) with Prof. Natalia Gutman, supported by a scholarship from the Onassis Foundation. She completed her degree with highest honors.
She has also enriched her education through numerous masterclasses with distinguished professors and musicians including Hatto Beyerle, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Maria Kliegel, Leonidas Kavakos, Alfred Brendel, Menahem Pressler, the Diotima Quartet, the Artis Quartet, Pavel Vernikov, and Vida Vujic.
As a soloist, Loukia Loulaki has performed with the Athens City Orchestra, the Thessaloniki City Orchestra, the “Orchestra of Colors,” the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, the Junge Philharmonie Wien, the Mödling Symphony Orchestra, and the Paneuropean Philharmonia. She has also made recordings with the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra (ERT). Her recital and chamber music performances have taken her across Europe, China, Japan, Peru, and Brazil, in venues such as the Vienna Musikverein, Vienna Konzerthaus, Grafenegg Festival, Vienna City Hall, Haydn House Vienna, Vienna Volkstheater, Philharmonie de Paris, the Basilica of Sant’Alessandro in Florence, the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Mozarteum São Paulo, Casa da Música in Porto, the Gent Festival, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, among others. In March 2012 she received the Tsuzuki Foundation Scholarship and made recordings for ORF at the RadioKulturhaus in Vienna.
As an active chamber musician, she has collaborated with many renowned artists, including Areta Zhulla (Juilliard Quartet), Anneleen Lenaerts (Principal Harp of the Vienna Philharmonic), R. Giannotti (Principal Bassoon of the Munich Philharmonic), Mario Hossen, and Gokhan Aybulus, among others. As chamber music gradually became the focus of her artistic work, she decided to expand her expertise further. In 2018 she began a Master’s degree in chamber music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw) in the class of Johannes Meissl (Artis Quartet). In 2020 she was awarded the Sylff Fellowship of the Tokyo Foundation upon nomination by the university, and in October 2021 she graduated with distinction.
She was a founding member of the Selini Quartet (2017–2022). With this ensemble she performed widely across Europe and received numerous prizes, including the mdw Great Talent Award (Austria, 2021), the Prague Spring International Music Competition (Czech Republic, 2021), the Ysaye International Music Competition (Belgium, 2021), the Szymanowski International Music Competition (Poland, 2018), and the Artis Prize at the ISA International Summer Academy (Austria). The quartet was also selected by the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as cultural ambassadors of Austria within the framework of the NASOM – New Austrian Sound of Music program for the years 2020–2022, performing regularly across the international network of Austrian cultural forums and embassies.
The quartet also worked regularly with Prof. Hatto Beyerle (Alban Berg Quartet) and was part of the ECMA (European Chamber Music Academy).
Since September 2022, Loukia Loulaki has been Professor of Cello at the Amadeus International School Vienna and the Amadeus Music and Arts Academy. Since September 2023, she has also been a cello tutor with SUPERAR Vienna.
